Eagles sign Pederson to be starting QB

PHILADELPHIA
(Feb. 17, 1999) New Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid
has placed ultimate confidence in a former pupil who has never
started an NFL game.
The Eagles signed career backup quarterback Doug Pederson to
a three-year contract and Reid promptly named him the starter.
"He's our starting quarterback," Reid said at an afternoon
news conference. "I'm firmly in his corner. I know what he
can do and he knows the offense we're going to run here."
After being stuck behind Brett Favre in Green Bay for the last
3½ seasons, Pederson received the biggest break of his
six-year career from his former quarterbacks coach with the Packers.
"I've been waiting for this opportunity and now I've got
it," Pederson said. "I believe I'm ready and I know
my coach has confidence in me."
The Eagles juggled Bobby Hoying, Rodney Peete and Koy Detmer
at quarterback last year and ranked last in the NFL in passing
yards and points.
Pederson, 30, originally was signed by the Miami Dolphins to
the practice squad in 1992 after a stellar college career at Northeast
Louisiana. He served as the team's third-string quarterback for
2½ seasons and attempted just 8 passes.
After being released by Miami in October 1995, Pederson signed
with the Packers a month later. He was active for just two games
in his first 2½ seasons with Green Bay before he was promoted
to backup last year.
Pederson finally received some playing time in an Oct. 5 loss
to Minnesota when an ineffective Favre was benched. He performed
well, completing 10 of 16 passes for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns.
But he also suffered a broken jaw and was
sidelined for five weeks.
